      Day 1 - BBYC Match Race 3

A beautiful Auckland Winters day greeted the teams this morning at the Buckland’s Beach Yacht Club and a gentle 8 – 10 knot southerly enabled racing to get away on schedule, which incidentally caught a few teams out as they ventured slightly too far away from the committee boat and struggled to get back in time for their pre-start entry. This almost became a feature of the day as a number of teams were caught out by an enthusiastic race committee keen to get races away and make the most of the conditions today.

The breeze kept everyone on their toes today shifting around the compass and the start boat was forced to move the course around chasing the breeze to keep the races ticking over.

Team Kiwi Match had a solid day winning 3 races from 5 starts, and with 2 more races left for us tomorrow we will need to make sure we keep up the winning ways to ensure a semi final spot.

      Day 2 - BBYC Match Race 3

It was another crisp clear day which greeted the teams at Buckland’s Beach Yacht Club on Sunday. The forecast was for light and variable winds so the race committee were keen to get us out there and try to complete the round robin and hopefully semi finals and finals.

To try and make use of a light south westerly which had formed in the channel the race committee set a course just off Buckland’s Beach and quickly got the first flight underway. However it wasn’t long until both matches were drifting around in glassy conditions and they were soon abandoned.

It was time for plan B and the Race Officer took the fleet out to the end of the channel in behind Browns Island as a light easterly had formed. Once again the first flight of the day was started and two close matches were into the second lap before the breeze started to fade; both matches were again left wallowing however the race committee persevered and both matches struggled to the finish line.  David Wood managed to take the win from us drifting past us on the final run to the finish.

Once again we were left waiting for breeze and in an attempt to break some of the ties in the unfortunate event we might not be able to complete the entire round robin the race committee decided to change the order of the remaining flights.

In a late building south westerly breeze we were called to sail our final race against Stephanie Hazard. Finally as the breeze built to around 8 – 10 knots we were able to show some form and dominated the pre-start and on a one sided race track we were able to lead comfortably from start to finish. This meant we finished the regatta on 5 wins which qualified us in 4th place for the semi finals.

The afternoon south westerly held in and the remaining flights were able to be completed to finish off the round robin, however due to all the delays caused by the light and variable breeze the race committee ran out of time to hold any finals racing.

So, we finished this regatta in 4th place which is enough for us to maintain our lead in the overall series results. With one more regatta remaining we are happy with how we are sailing and confident we can secure a series win.
